The role

Wirepas is hiring a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to grow our AMI embedded capability in India. Wirepas’ AMI software is primarily developed in Europe (Tampere, Grenoble). Your role is to own that software locally for the Indian market: port and adapt the AMI v2 NIC application onto every new meter manufacturer’s NIC hardware, evolve and maintain it across the AMI roadmap, and partner tightly with our European SW R&D teams. This is the deep-dev role on the India embedded team. You will work alongside our existing embedded engineer and a Meter Integration & Test Engineer (Level I) who runs the day-to-day test campaigns and customer coordination. Your time is primarily in the codebase, in the lab and on architecture calls with European R&D – with focused customer-facing time for the conversations that genuinely require firmware-level depth: protocol-level alignment with OEM SW leads, security and OTAP architecture decisions, and root-cause for tricky cross-firmware issues. The ambition is concrete: software adaptations and lifecycle maintenance for the Indian smart-metering market should be owned in India. You will be a key part of making that happen. • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electronics & Communication or related engineering discipline, with 8+ years of embedded software engineering experience. • Embedded software engineering experience in the AMI domain. You have shipped firmware or NIC / meter-side communication firmware in AMI products, and you are fluent with DLMS. Shall you have the motivation to learn in IS15959 Part 2 and SBD as used in Indian smart metering. • Strong C on ARM Cortex-M class MCUs. Comfortable with bare-metal and lightweight RTOS environments and with low-level peripherals (UART, SPI, I²C, GPIO, DMA, flash, security / keys, OTAP). • Production-grade software discipline: Git, code reviews, CI pipelines, build systems (CMake/Make), unit and integration testing, structured release management. You’ve owned a non-trivial codebase across multiple releases. • Strong technical communication. You can lead a firmware architecture discussion with a meter OEM’s SW lead, write a clean design note, and represent Wirepas credibly with senior technical stakeholders. • Working comfortably across time zones in a remote setup. We’re a global team, so that sometimes means early mornings or late evenings – whatever it takes to support the customer and get things done. • Strong problem-solving skills, highly self-motivated, detail-oriented, with a Can-Do attitude and the drive to proactively improve our engineering practices and our customer experience. • Ability to communicate fluently in English as it’s the company language.

What we expect

  • You are a senior embedded firmware engineer who has shipped real products. You read other people’s C without flinching, you know your Cortex-M code, and you can hold a serious DLMS or protocol-architecture conversation with a meter OEM’s firmware lead without losing your footing. You like owning code, but you also like seeing it work end-to-end in the field.
  • You like working with teams of diverse talent and should see opportunities where other people see challenges. You can build relations with your colleagues, mainly abroad in Europe, to help your customers locally. You’re comfortable being the technical mentor in your domain on the India embedded team and coaching your colleagues. Commenté [SV1]: it may not sound appropriate
  • This position involves occasional domestic travel for tough customer escalations and onboarding, and occasional international travel to Wirepas in Finland or France and partner sites.
  • As a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer, your responsibilities include:
  • • Own the Wirepas AMI software locally. Port and adapt the AMI v2 NIC application (RF NIC and Dual Communication NIC) onto each new meter manufacturer’s NIC hardware. Bring up the firmware on new MCUs, stabilize the build, and own the resulting codebase for that OEM.
  • • Evolve and maintain the AMI software for the Indian market. Own the maintenance backlog for meters in production in India – bug fixes, security patches, OTAP rollouts, regression. Develop new features and adaptations required by the Indian roadmap, partnering with European R&D when platform-level changes are needed.
  • • Lead technical alignment with meter OEMs. Be part of conversations with meter OEM’s SW lead on NIC integration, DLMS, IS 15959 Part 2, push/pull conversion, scheduled reading, time sync, security, key handling, OTAP and similar protocol-level topics. Drive issues to closure across firmware boundaries.
  • • Quality engineering. Set the bar on code quality, code review, testability, and structured release management for the India embedded team. Partner with European R&D on shared standards (Git workflow, CI, coding guidelines, security review).
  • • Contribute to the platform. Push improvements, learnings and feature requirements upstream to the European SW R&D teams. Where it makes sense, contribute features back into the core AMI codebase rather than fork.
  • • Coach and grow the India embedded team. Mentor the Meter Integration & Test Engineer and other junior engineers on embedded depth. Back them up on protocol-level customer questions when escalations require it.
  • • Report and align on timelines. Work with Platform development head and own the software-side milestones with meter manufacturer. Report status, risks and decisions to Customer Project Managers and management.
  • • Experience with mesh (Wirepas, Wi-SUN, Zigbee, Thread) or low-power wireless stacks. This is the genuinely rare combination with AMI – a strong differentiator, but not a hard requirement.
  • • Cellular / NB-IoT modem AT-command integration in metering or other constrained IoT products.
  • • Experience designing or running continuous-integration test farms for embedded devices.
  • • Python scripting for tooling and test automation.
  • • Prior experience as a firmware lead at an Indian smart meter OEM, or as the firmware integrator between a meter OEM and a NIC / module vendor.
  • In return, we offer you:
  • • Nordic work culture of trust, responsibility, freedom, and value for flat hierarchies.
  • • Challenging work in the technology field. Not just fridges on the internet, but real impact: millions of meters already deployed in India on Wirepas, and a clear roadmap to 10M+.
  • • A clear growth path: this role is part of a deliberate plan to grow Wirepas’ embedded software capability in India, with full ownership of the AMI software for the Indian market over time, in partnership with our European SW R&D teams.
  • • Genuinely international working culture with the best talents and bright minds across India, Finland, France, Germany, Spain, UK, US and Australia.
  • • The basics: indefinite contract with money to your bank account. Sometimes it’s not just the monthly remuneration but also bonuses.
  • • We want you to see the success you’re a part of, so we offer options for Wirepas shares.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes; we’re sure you’re a quick learner!
