Site Manager / Site Engineer
Are you interested in a more sustainable future and working with new types of energy storage solutions? Polar Night Energy is now looking for a Site Engineer or Site Manager to take responsibility for delivering innovative thermal energy storage projects.
Polar Night Energy, a growing company based in Tampere, has developed a new technology that enables energy to be stored in sand as thermal energy. The Sand Battery was chosen as the Finnish Innovation of the Year in 2023, and the technology is already in commercial use in Pornainen and Kankaanpää. The next thermal energy storage system will be built in cooperation with Lahti Energia in Vääksy, you can read more about the project here.
What will you be doing?
In this role, you will have a significant impact on the successful execution of the Vääksy project as well as future Sand Battery projects. Polar Night Energy delivers turnkey thermal energy storage systems and acts as the main contractor at construction sites. You will take part in project implementation throughout the entire lifecycle – from design coordination to construction phases and commissioning.
Your main responsibility is to advance thermal storage construction sites and act as the interface between Polar Night Energy, the supervising site manager, subcontractors, and authorities. You will also play a key role in design coordination, linking different design disciplines with site operations to ensure that design solutions are implemented efficiently, with high quality, and safely.
Projects typically last from one to two years, and your daily tasks may include:
- Planning and ensuring site quality and safety, as well as installation supervision
- Managing interfaces between design and construction
- Managing site documentation
- Participating in construction-related procurement and supporting contractor selection
- Depending on your skills and interests, supporting cost estimation or sales in early project stages
In a startup environment, your role is versatile and evolves with both your expertise and the company’s needs. Above all, your goal is to ensure smooth project execution in terms of cost, quality, safety, schedule, and functionality.
What kind of professional are we looking for?
You’ll work closely with internal and external stakeholders, so strong communication and teamwork skills are essential. You already have experience in similar roles – for example as a site supervisor, site engineer, site manager, or installation inspector – and you now want to take part in delivering new types of energy storage projects. You understand what successful project work requires and prefer solving challenges proactively rather than reactively. Most importantly, we hope you are eager to learn and motivated to help build a more sustainable future together with Polar Night Energy’s team.
What we expect from you:
- Relevant technical educational background (B.Eng. / M.Sc., e.g., construction engineering, mechanical engineering, or energy engineering)
- Previous relevant work experience (2+ years) and readiness to carry out construction projects as part of a project team
- Strong collaboration, leadership, and prioritization skills
- Good communication skills in Finnish and English
- A category B driving licence and willingness to travel regularly to project sites
Additionally considered an advantage:
- Experience in the energy sector
- Qualification to act as a responsible site manager
- Previous experience in design coordination, industrial installation supervision, or quality management
What Polar Night Energy offers you:
- An opportunity to build a more sustainable future through new and promising technology
- The chance to make a visible impact – as a small and early-stage company, your contribution can influence not only your role but also the company’s growth, processes, and ways of working
- A knowledgeable and enthusiastic work community united by the mission of a more sustainable and environmentally friendly future
- A work environment where employee well-being comes first – Polar Night Energy has a 30-hour work week
- Flexibility and freedom to plan your work. Your routine includes regular site visits; otherwise, you can use office facilities or work from home as you prefer
- Employee benefits such as culture, sports, and lunch benefits
- Stock options and a salary based on your experience and skills; for this role, the monthly salary will likely start with a 3 or a 4
Polar Night Energy’s office is located in Tampere, and the projects themselves may be located anywhere in Finland, currently with a focus on Southern Finland. In the near future, the company aims to bring the technology to international markets. Therefore, we expect readiness to travel and willingness to work on-site whenever required.
